We recently spent 35 days on a 3300 mile circle route through 10 states going as far west as Texas and ending up in Florida where we left the motor home. We had a number of observations - some of them you know, some you may not. Below are few:
- Late October is a great time to head toward the middle of the country. Weather is moderate and foliage is beautiful everywhere.
- Our vote for “Best place visited” – San Antonio, TX. Attractions are modestly priced (many free) leaving money to spend on other things. The RIVER WALK exceeded expectations.
- Downtown New Orleans is flourishing, but the Northeast corner of the city is not.
- Biggest disappointment – Paducah, KY. Besides the “Quilter’s Hall of Fame”, most other quilt related activities have closed. Branson, MO was better.
- Second – rebuilding along the Gulf Coast after Katrina is lagging. I think over half of the beach front homes have not been rebuilt. Many have “For Sale” signs on them.
- Highest priced gas – New York: $2.85 per gallon
- Lowest priced gas – 60 miles west of Houston, TX (I - 10): $2.19 per gallon. Once out of the Northeast, price was below $2.50 until we reached Florida.
- Oklahoma and Texas welcome folks to spend a night in their Rest Areas and Welcome Centers.
- Flying J has recovered nicely from bankruptcy protection. RV parking sites are larger, gas prices are lower and member cards typically give an additional 1.5 cents/gallon off. $10 spent in the store gives 3 cents off for the month; $20 gives 5 cents off.
- A number of state parks in the south (including Louisianna) honor the Golden Age Pass – giving 50% discount on camping and free admission.
